Celebrating Islamic New Year, Thursina IIBS Hosts Tahfidz and Speech Competition

On the first of Muharram 1445, Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) celebrated the Islamic New Year with educational events of Tahfidzul Quran competition and Bahasa Indonesia speech competition. The festivities took place on July 19 and brought together student representatives from both junior and senior high school levels.

These competitions provided a platform for students to enhance and showcase their tahfidz skills while developing their public speaking abilities. “This year, to commemorate the first of Muharram, Thursina hosted a Tahfidzul Quran competition and Bahasa Indonesia speech competition. These events are designed to foster students' confidence and competitiveness,” explained Ustadz Syaikhul Islam, S.Pd.I, coordinator of the Thursina IIBS Ulama Cadre Creation.

Ustadz Syaikhul noted that students from grades 8, 9, 11, and 12 participated in the event. The Tahfidzul Quran participants gave stellar performances, demonstrating their skills in reading and memorizing the Quran. These students were assessed based on their tartil and tajwid skills through the ‘finish-the-verse method. “Each participant was expected to complete a verse from the 30th juz in four sessions,” he added.

In the end, Fatih Firdaus from the 8th grade secured first place in the tahfidz competition, while Dzaky Aninda and Nabilil Aqila from the 11th grade won second and third places, respectively. Meanwhile, other students shared their words of wisdom in the Bahasa Indonesia speech competition. Participants were given a theme to develop into a seven-minute speech, which they delivered in front of a panel of judges. Bhadra Fadhal from the 12th grade captivated the judges with his performance, winning first place, followed by Muhammad Ghafiqi from the 11th grade in second place, and Azzam Cahyo from the 8th grade in third.

Alhamdulillah. I’m happy and surprised because I didn’t have any preparations,” admitted Fatih Firdaus. “Participating in this competition is important for improving memorization and gaining experience.”

Similarly, Muhammad Ghafiqi emphasized the importance of such events for students to participate in so they can gain competing experience while developing their self-esteem. Ghafiqi hoped that this Islamic New Year celebration would inspire students to learn, compete, and nurture camaraderie in the spirit of Islam.

“We hope this event can strengthen students' religious values and national spirit,” he concluded, “as well as provide a platform for students to develop their public speaking potentials.”
