7 Thursina IIBS Students Represent Indonesia at 13th AYIMUN in Malaysia

Several Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) students took part at the 13th Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN). Being held at Malaysia on January 26-29, these group of students were one of the few contingents representing Indonesia at the prestigious international event.

Acting as Indonesia’s delegates in the event are 7 of Thursina IIBS students: Reihan Arvie Zafarani (11th grade), Rye Saladdin Akhtar (11th grade), Ezar Dega Auffa (11th grade), Kholilullah ar Rosydy (11th grade), Muhammad Zakki Aqillah Tahang Killian (11th grade), Ahza Adelio Hamizan Abdad (11th grade) , and Muhammad Duta Bangsa (11th grade).

AYIMUN is a United Nations (UN) Conference simulation attended by young leaders known as ‘delegates’. They are given the task of representing a country at one of the UN committee with several previously established debate topics. “This event also serves as a platform where young leaders from all over the world gather to achieve a uniform goal. This can further improve their leadership, negotiation, and diplomasi skills,” explained Ustadz Helmi Pakas Rivai who accompanied the students on this trip.

To be chosen as one of the delegates is of coure not an easy feat. There are multiple selection stages that the students must undergo. After applying online, these students were assessed based on their submitted motivation latter, explained Ustadz Helmi. Afterwards, candidates who have passed will receive a mandate that determine the list of delegates and what country they are representing.

As the AYIMUN drew close, all participants would receive an intensive training on how to put together a solutions paper in line with the provided issues and the country that have become their mandate. They were also coached to write a proper paper to present at the simulation later, Ustadz Helmi continued.

The students also got the chance to train directly with an experienced Model United Nation delegate for three months. “Despite their young age, we want to prepare them as best as we can,” said Ustadz Helmi.

During the AYIMUN, participants gained so much insights on critical thinking, team-work, effective communication, and not to mention, problem solving ability.

“Thus, the 13th AYIMUN becomes an excellent choice for young leaders who want to enhance and develop their communication and diplomaci skills,” offered Ustadz Helmi.
