Preparing for Further Studies, 19 Thursina IIBS Students Flew to Australia for Language Camp
Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) is committed to guiding its high school students in their higher education preparation. After previously sending students to attend language camp in Turkey, the school has now flown students to Australia for a similar program.
Held at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, the language camp ran from October 25 to November 10, 2023. A total of 19 students participated in the program with the goal of further developing their English language skills.
The program offered a platform for students to practice their English both for academic and social purposes by learning and interacting directly with native speakers. For the duration of the program, Thrusina students were granted a full-time student card just like regular Griffith University students. This allowed them to access a number of facilities and learning materials available in-campus for their independent learning activities such as writing journal summaries and book review in the library.
Ustadz Mohammad Suhaili, S.Pd., the manager of overseas study enrollment at Thursina IIBS, noted that this language camp is an elective program available as one of the services aimed to help high school students with their further studies preparations. Through the language camp, students are encouraged to learn languages directly in the countries where they plan to study in the future. Previously, the program was held in Turkey, before now taking place in Australia.
“Thursina is dedicated to assist students’ further studies preparation by flying them directly to the destination countries,” explained Ustadz Suhaili.
Aside from learning at Griffith University, students also had the opportunity to explore downtown Brisbane. On top of that, they were also invited to tour the campus of Queensland University of Technology.
Upon arrival, students were first introduced to the campus area, familiarizing them with their new surroundings. Then, they would participate in longer intensive English language tutoring sessions. This is part of Thursina IIBS commitment to foster internationally minded alumni.
The program offered a platform for students to practice their English both for academic and social purposes by learning and interacting directly with native speakers. Students also did various independent learning activities such as writing journal summaries and book reviews in the library.
“The program is not just about learning the language, it is also meant to familiarize students with the daily activities and habits of university students to lessen culture shocks when they eventually become one,” added Ustadz Suhaili.
During their time in Australia, the students also visited the University of Queensland. There the students toured the Department of Business and Engineering. They also got the chance to chat with Indonesian students there who are part of the UQISA about admission journeys and scholarships. On the weekend, the students also went down to the iconic Sydney Opera House before wrapping up the trip.
