Introducing the Research Method of Product Development, Thursina IIBS Held Entrepreneurial Talk
Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) held Entrepreneurial Talk with the theme Research Method 101 for students of class 11 for Entrepreneur major (22/01). Invited Ustadz Tedy Niko Jatmiko S., M.Pd., The Manager Assistant of Quality Assurance of Thursina IIBS, the webinar talked about the process of research for business. It was supposed the projects of students are not only finished as a school task, but also implemented in the future.
To begin with, Ustadz Niko explained how students take a role as a researcher or product developer. As analogy, researchers could put themselves as scavengers coming to slum areas, collecting scavenged products, and selling them. Then, they should be solution to help clean up dirty areas.
"It means, the researcher should be a problem solver to deal with the issues around him through product innovations or other findings, " He said
To formulate a problem, inverted pyramid concept could be used. Ustadz Niko shared the pyramid into four parts, at the top is general idea, followed by real condition, ideal condition, and the solution analysis, at the bottom part. If the disparity between the real and the ideal condition is far enough, then there the problem exists. To compare both condition, research on the phenomenon is required.
"Innovation would emerge when the researcher could compare between the real and the ideal condition of the phenomenon, " He explained.
Furthermore, he emphasised that students should stick on research principals. Firstly, logic, in which they should see the problem with the frame of theories and empirical facts. Secondly, hypotesis, temporary allegation related to the issue. Lastly, verification, proving of the hypotesis.
"Research has made us to have critical and solvable thinking related to the issues around us" He said
In addition, he reminded students to do a research based on their interest, therefore its process could be fun and fit in with the competence of the researcher. Supporting and useful factors should be considered as well in a study.
"Make sure that our research could benefit wider community. As the best humans are those who are useful for others," he said.
In this session, he explained in detail the steps for product development. Including a preliminary study, need analysis and literacy studies, followed by planning, product development, and finally, validation from the experts and practitioners. This product development steps were adapted from the Borg & Gall model which have been widely used since 1983.
"Customers are seeking for different things at all times, therefore research for business is essential to create specific products and holds more selling points than other products," he added.
