Introducing Aviation, Tazkia IIBS Invite AirNav Indonesia
All students of Senior High School of Tazkia International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) are on monthly seminar program, aimed to provide them with learning from practitioners to be skilled in their future profession. This time, Nurul Huda, S.Sos, as the Head of Airnav, Malang Branch, shared experience as air traffic guide on Saturday (11/17).
"The ability to work under pressure is one requirement of Air Traffic Control (ATC) officer," he said. Dozens of planes are controlled and monitored by some units, operated by Air Traffic Controllers. They monitore and lead each plane starting from preparation to taking off in the height of 1000 feet; another unit will monitor over the height.
The officers should have some skills to control air traffic. "English language becomes one of the main skills to be mastered because they will communicate with various pilots from any countries," he added.
Furthermore, they should know about air law such as aviary rules and suggestions and understanding about plane performance, whether it is proper to fly or not. Before flight, the pilot will ask permission to ATC. When agreed, the plane will head to the runway to get ready to fly.
"Before taking off, the pilot has to report the flight to ATC tower. Thus, 30 minutes before the aircraft engine turned on, he is obliged to inform ATC to get flight permit to be channeled to other units and processed during the flight," says Nurul Huda in front of the whole students.
ATC officer has 'close relation' with the pilot. If something happens to the plane, the pilot communicates with the controller. High working pressure requires good health both physically and mentally. Intense concentration is heavely demanded so that hundreds of passengers safely arrive at their destination. "Even medical examination is held regularly; physical and mental health is checked to avoid them from stress," he added.
Flight preparation such as the runway should be free from anything, also, wind power and weather must be checked first by ATC officer to be reported to the pilot.
In the airport of Abdurrahman Saleh Malang, there are 10 on going flight destinations with 14 flights per day served by ATC.
