Inviting Graphic Designer of UNESCO, Students of Sciencepreneur Learn Visual Communication
“Remember Me, Through A Powerful Visual Communication”, a theme of workshop for male and female students of year 11 of sciencepreneur held by Tazkia International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) (10/5-6). The speaker, Ganni Ramadian Mulya, the alumnus of Visual Communication Design of Bandung Institute of Technology, is a graphic designer for UNESCO. Students will learn and practise to create visual comunication design from the science data in the workshop.
The chief of sciencepreneur major, Ustadzah Ratu Fatimah explained that visual communication is the vital part to simplify understanding the data of research. Therefore, the workshop would support Science Communication lesson in sciencepreneur major. "The subject is basics for students to summarise complicated data to be easily understand in the wider community," she said.
The workshop was managed in two sessions. The history, basics of layout and design arrangements, and things to avoid in communicating data in a visual form will be delivered in the first meeting. Design elements such as shapes, lines, numbers, colors, and text should always be thoroughly considered in creating visual communication design. Likewise design and layout principles, such as balance, rhythm, focus, and unity.
"Of the elements and design principles, the main part is functional, the message can be delivered and well-understood by the reader. Functional design comes from aesthetics,” he told.
After the basic theories, the participants are required to create two dimensions of visual work, which will be presented and reviewed in the second meeting in the following day. The selection of the type and size of the font is a crucial point in evaluating the works of students. In addition, the compatibility between text and images needs to be optimised. Two best male and female participants were selected based on their enthusiasm and work in the final meeting.
Ustadzah Rafa, furthermore, revealed that students will get use to summarise and paraphrase important information. It will help them to readily understand the information in the learning process. The workshop will develop their ability to communicate the information visually as it is prominent in the digital era. She told that other workshops, such as presentation and writing, would be held in the future.
"When they know well how to deliver information in the visual communication form, they also could use the skill in other structured tasks," she concluded.
