Students of Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) introduce innovations in the transformation of history and geography study using technology-based learning methods, namely the Marlo Map.  History and geography materials are able to be more interactive and interesting by this approach. Marlo Map, furthermore, connects traditional learning with technological developments, in order to prepare a young generation that is better prepared to deal with global challenges. The idea has won a Silver Medal in the ISIF (International Science and Invention Fair).

The initiators of the work are Audrey Ogya Awandiningrum, Audrey Syafa Azzahra, Chalisah Kanita, Nabila Azhari Putri Hasfareza, and Radyananta Puan Hascarya. Based on their research, History course presents often in the thick text-book and non-interactive methods such as memorizing dates, facts and maps. As a result, students need much help to learn the topics at hand and  attract less attention, especially to those who interact daily with technology. Therefore, the group developed the Marlo Map and invited students to master the chapters of the world history.

Additionally, Marlo map incorporates gamification in education.  Audrey Ogya Awandiningrum stated, gamification will add a sense of adventure. The game website uses a visually bright colored pixels to add an aesthetic impression, nostalgic but modern, and retro in style. The game screen displays  Indonesian archipelago, supporting historical and geographical elements of the rich culture nation.

Once users open the site and register, they will be greeted by Marlo, the Balinese starling mascot, as a game guide. The mascot represents unique wildlife of Indonesia. He will invite users to explore  Indonesian archipelago. "Marlo introduces the fauna exists in our country, to bridge between cultural education and entertainment," said Audrey.

The users would choose one from two main characters, Andi or Anne. Marlo will accompany predetermined characters throughout the journey, provide tips and insight into the history and geography of Indonesia, engaging the learning process to be more dynamic and personal. There are historical-themed puzzles, requiring players to assemble parts of a historical event or match geographical landmarks. "We create mini games to test knowledge acquired during the learning process," said Audrey.

Battle scenarios are offered as well. Players will fight enemies from inspired history. They need to apply what they have learned to win. Educational games, such as Marlo Maps, are expected to help improve academic achievement in history and geography. It remains crucial to appreciate cultural heritage in the midst of increasing global community exposed to abundant information. The values are in line with what have been reflected in the daily lives of Thursina IIBS students, concerning on confidence, caring, open minded and inspiring. (sls/lil)
