Thursina IIBS Counselor Raises Awareness on Importance of Healthy Diet, Hosts PhotoVoice Exhibition

Diet is a major contributing factor in human health, influencing everything from overall well-being and body weight to mood and energy levels. Today, many people are familiar with a variety of unhealthy foods that are widely available, while healthy options are more often than not less accessible for most people. This dilemma motivated Ustadzah Risa Nur Fitriyana, S.Psi., to conduct a research on the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, particularly for the students at Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS).

Titled ‘Healthy Food Stories: Modified Photovoice Intervention as a Strategy to Increase Healthy Food Preferences in Middle School Students’, Ustadzah Risa’s research was funded by a center for nutritional studies, the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Food and Nutrition (SEAMEO RECFON).

“This study involved students as a method to enhance their own awareness. At least 34 students participated in the study as co-researchers," noted Ustadzah Risa.

This study focused on the shift in food preferences from unhealthy to healthy options. The research process began with a workshop for the 34 co-researchers, where they learned how to take proper and aesthetically pleasing photographs that convey a story. The workshop also included a lecture on diet and nutritional literacy to help guide them during their research.

“The output of the research is a photovoice exhibition. Through the photos that they took and turned into posters, researchers can tell the story of their journey in shifting their diet into a healthier one,” explained Ustadzah Risa.

The research revealed a significant shift in food preferences and diets among students. They became aware that their previous food choices were unhealthy, which gradually motivated them to adopt healthier eating habits. For instance, these days sweet sugary drinks are very common, however consuming them in excessive amounts can lead to various health issues.

To tackle this issue, students participating in the study began promoting the importance of drinking water over sugary beverages. "This method is interesting for teenage students, allowing more students to learn about the significance of healthy eating."added Ustadzah Risa.

During the exhibition, the enthusiasm among attending students was palpable, which helped to spread information effectively. Even after the event concluded, students continued to approach the co-researchers with questions about healthy food.

Ustadzah Risa hopes that the widespread information about the importance of choosing healthy food and drinks will further enhance students' awareness of their well-being.
