In a remarkable feat of innovation, 15 Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) students successfully brought home 3 medals from the 2023 World Invention Competition and Exhibition (WICE) in Malaysia.
The students, who were divided into 3 teams, showcased their ideas at the prestigious international festival. The first team, made up of Muhammad Naufal Adqaury Ibnu Syaifa, Fatih Firdaus, Kafi Muhammad, Muhammad Yusuf Ibrahim Hermawan, and Alif Al Ghozali, presented their work on rice-based hand sanitizer titled Sanitizer Quelling Unhygienic Ailments with Daily RICE-based Antiseptic (SQUADRA): Ethanol-based Hand Sanitizer Gel from Cafeteria Leftover Rice Fermentation.
The idea originated from a rising concern about food waste, particularly rice waste. They wanted to find a way to treat and repurpose these waste into something of use. This predicament inspired them to create a cleaning gel derived from fermented rice waste. Ustadz Farhan Naufal Firdaus Al Fath, M.Si., who accompanied them in the competition, explained that their concept was further motivated by the growing importance of hygiene in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic.
“Thanks to this idea, these students of Thursina Junior High won the gold medal at the international competition,” noted Ustadz Farhan.
Meanwhile the second team consisted of Alif Pirata Muhammad, Muhammad Dhonan Chilmi, Atharauf Rafka Maulana, Evan Dhaaqi Afta Pratama and Muhammad Daivan Akbar Fadhlah. All of them are students of Thursina IIBS Junior High School.
These students presented their brilliant idea on banana-peel based sunscreen. Their project, titled Sunbynanaa: Transforming Banana Peel Into Sunscreen to Protect Skin From Ultraviolet Radiation, led them to win the silver medal in this 2023 WICE.
Their project was influenced by warnings about the rising ultraviolet index. Due to this phenomenon, several regions in Indonesia are anticipated to face high to extreme levels of heat and UV radiation. The project was meant to manage banana peel waste while also treating them into a protective material against intense ultraviolet radiation. The team then formulated a sunscreen product using the peel of Musa acuminata × balbisiana (Saba) bananas through two different methods.
Last but not least, Muhammad Imam Kayyis, Muhammad Rafi Kalevi, Alfa Nafi Ikhsando, Muhammad Gymnastiar Josivaneo, Muhammad Syamil Abiy Syathir, made up the third team competing in this event. These Thursina IIBS High School students also striked the silver medal with their groundbreaking invention.
The five of them presented their idea titled Synthesis Graphene Oxide (GO) From Coconut Shell-Based Charcoal by Modified Hummers Method and Future Application on Epoxy/GO. Their research is based on the utilization of coconut as a raw material for the production of graphene oxide using the modified version of the Hummers method
“We are actively introducing and familiarizing students to the world of research in hopes of sparking their interest in academia. One of the ways we achieve this is by participating in both national and international competitions,” concluded Ustadz Farhan.
