Thursina IIBS Strengthens 3S1C Program: Instilling Manners through Smiles, Greetings, Shaking and Kissing Hands
Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) has introduced the 3S1C program, an abbreviation of smile, greeting, handshake, and handkiss. It is designed to instill noble manners of students towards teachers. Applied wherever students meet their teachers, even out of boarding school.
Ustadz Muhammad Rajab, Chief of Education of Thursina IIBS, explained the necessity of the program by quoting Imam Az-Zarnuji's in the book of Ta'limul Muta'alim: "Know that a student will not gain knowledge and its benefits except by glorifying knowledge, the scholars, and respecting teachers." He said, 3S1C is the key for students to achieve the blessings of knowledge, including ziyadatul khoir—increasing the merit of knowledge.
Philosophically, the 3S1C program has been part of the values of Thursina IIBS since its establishment in 2014. 3S1C is stemmed from the 5S program (prayer, greeting, trash, uniform, shoes & sandals), focusing on the greeting point. "Every male student, meeting a male teacher or female student, meeting a female teacher is required to do 3S1C," said Ustadz Rajab, emphasizing the institution commitment to instilling the manners.
It aims to strengthen the character of students through intensive habituation. By smiling, greeting, shaking, and kissing hands when meeting teachers, they are expected to develop the habit of respecting others and appreciating knowledge. These manners would become the characteristics of students that will be carried into their lives in the future.
It has positive response as many students have practiced daily. The teachers play an active role in reminding them through mentoring and supervision. “We greet them first to remind the manners,” said Ustadz Rajab, highlighting the learning approach.
Thursina IIBS hopes the program will foster an attitude of ikram—honoring knowledge and scholars—in the students. The greatest impact is the blessing and advantage of knowledge for success in the world and hereafter. The program is a manifestation of Thursina IIBS dedication to educate generation with noble character.
Through 3S1C, Thursina IIBS teaches youth who excel academically as well as respect knowledge and teachers, ready to spread kindness wherever they are. (sls/lil)
