Mastering Aerodynamic Engineering, Thursina IIBS Students Win Medals in the ASEAN Water Rocket Competition, Thailand
Prestigious achievement was reached again by the couple students of Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS). They are from grade 11, Atha Haidar Naufal Anugroho and Azzam Muyassar, winning medals in the ASEAN Water Rocket Competition, held in Thailand on 31 of January – 3 of February 2025. Atha Haidar took home the Silver Medal, while Azzam Muyassar received the Bronze, competing with participants from various ASEAN countries. It was the first event organized by Indonesia Science Center (ISC) in collaboration with the National Science Museum (NSM), Thailand. The objective is to increase science interest and skills in students aged 12-18 years in Southeast Asia. In the future, the event is expected to involve more science centers from ASEAN countries.
Ustadz Helmi Pakas, M.Pd., as the supervisor, expressed his pride in the accomplishment. “This is not only a victory for Atha and Azzam, but also for Thursina IIBS and Indonesia. They prove that boarding school Students are able to be great in religious knowledge, as well as in science and technology internationally. "Moreover, Atha Haidar attained the top 10 in the world championship," he said.
“Their journey to the ASEAN competition was challenging. They first received a recommendation from Jatim Park 1, then participated in National Water Rocket Competition held by Indonesia Science Center BRIN at TMI, Jakarta," said Ustadz Helmi. The outstanding performance had passed them to international scale championship in Thailand, making proud the nation in the globally reputable event.
The participants are challenged to design and launch a water rocket using proper aerodynamic techniques. They have to ensure launch precision, range and stability of the rocket, which are determining factors in the assessment.
Ustadz Helmi added that competitions alike are necessary for students to hone critical thinking and innovation skills. "Students learn how to solve problems, think creatively, and work in teams. Those are skills required in the future," he explained. Hopefully, It will inspire other students to develop their potential in the fields of science and technology. "Hopefully this achievement will trigger enthusiasm of other students to dare try reaching their dreams. There is no limit for anyone to excel, including boarding school students," added Ustadz Helmi.
The recent achievement would strengthen Thursina IIBS's commitment to build a youth with deep understanding of religion, excel in the academic field and is able to compete on the international stage. Thursina IIBS continues to encourage its students to be competitive, innovative and resolvable to global challenges through a total support for the development of science and technology. (rnw/lil)
