Inviting the Expert : Sciencepreneur Major of Tazkia Held Webinar of Nature Preservation

Sciencepreneur Major of Senior High School of Tazkia held webinar session by the theme Learning from Nature (08/10), attended by all students of sciencepreneur and teachers of Tazkia via zoom application. Kotaro Okamoto, a speaker, is a Japanese biology teacher and nature volunteer and guide.

He explained about the function of Basin Flood Control toward environment.

Basin Flood Control is a broad basin or trench that is located right next to a river to accommodate river overflows.  The quite wide location provides considerable distance between the river and the residents' housing to prevent river water overflowing from residents' housing or roads.

Okamoto, furthermore, explained that in its development, basin could become a new habitat for some wild animals.  In fact, there are several species of birds and insects that make it a new habitat.  Certainly, this is a discovery that has become a special attraction for the community to be interested in coming and seeing firsthand how wild animals live in nature.

"When people start to understand and get used to seeing wild animals in the wild they will start to be interested in studying them and care," he explained. In addition, Okamoto shared his experience in conducting research on fish hunting behavior by the Striated Heron / Sea Kokokan (Butorides striata) using bait fishing.  Through his observation video, he showed the bait fishing process which is similar to the fishing process carried out by humans, using bait.  From these observations he found that although bait fishing methods take longer, the success rate is much higher.

In question and answer session, the presenter shared his teaching experience in Kumamoto, Japan. The use of graphics, videos, and props could be an effective method to teach biology especially about nature. Additionally, increasing the number of experiments will also increase students' interest in learning. He, finally, revealed that he was open if Tazkia would like to collaborate on conducting research or observation about the wild.

"The main purpose of introducing the wild is to advocate the community to understand more about the wild thus they could increase their concern for protecting nature, "he concluded.
