Inspiring ! Couple Thursina IIBS Teams Brought Home Gold and Silver Medals from WSEEC 2024
Students of Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) have made another achievement by winning 2024 World Science, Environment, Engineering and Competition (WSEEC), ranging from gold, silver, special awards and overall champion (28/05).
The competition was organized by Indonesian Young Scientist Association (IYSA) in collaboration with the Food and Science Technology Department of Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) and the Faculty of Pharmacy, Pancasila University, Jakarta. It was held in the Faculty of Pharmacy, Pancasila University, on 13-16, May 2024.
Thursina has participated in the event with 2 research teams from high school students, supervised by Ustadzah Rafa Fatimah, M.Si. The first team (Nilna Muna Al Ghofir, Nayla Syarifatarrusyda, and Yofana Keyza Irianto) has thriumphed gold medal, MICCA Special Awards, and Grand Prize (General Champion) for high school level. This proud achievement has a Life Science theme with the title "The Effect of Vaistas Tea on the Expression of TNF Alpha and Caspase 3 in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats".
The research is a continuation of previous Vaistas tea research regarding the effect of the Vaistas test in reducing the risk of diabetes. Test sampling was carried out on mice. The team completed the data regarding the mechanism of Vaistas tea at the cellular level by looking at the effect of administering Vaistas tea on the expression of TNF-alpha and Caspase 3, proteins that play a role in inflammation and apoptosis in the livers of diabetic mice. In this research, they continued with in-depth study of different materials and parameters. Previously, the same research had succeeded in winning the championship in the 2023 Indonesian Student Research Olympiad (OPSI) competition carried out by two researchers (Azka Tsabita Nurdin and Ghania Fazila Hadi).
Meanwhile, the second team of Thursina was rewarding. The team consist of five, Athira Safir Gadiza, Azzahra Husnu Fikrina, Celya Nayswa Setyawan, Elvaretta Nafisah, and Muthia Kumil Laela raising the theme of technology promoting alternative solution, automatic machines for separating types of waste by improving functions and systems through Eco-Bingo application.
They won a Silver Medal in the competition with research entitled "Development of a Reverse Vending Machine by Optimizing the Way the Machine Works and Rewarding Users through ECO-BINGO" which really impressing the judges.
Brilliant achievement from winning international championship with 364 competing teams from 18 different countries, is due to all the determined training and preparation before the competition. They admitted that the preparation had started 5 months ago with various activities such as planning, data collection, analysis, writing and making posters as well as presentation practice using English.
It is hoped that the success of the couple teams will boost inspiring upcoming research of Thursina students. The supervisor, Ustadzah Rafa, has appreciated those impressive achievements.
"From year to year, I see an increasing research atmosphere in Thursina High School, I hope it continues because this is superb for developing students' abilities in the 4Cs: Critical Thinking, Creative, Communication and Collaboration. "I also hope that there will be a large research umbrella so that the direction of research in Thursina can be more focused, sustainable and can produce something more comprehensive and meaningful," concluded Ustadzah Rafa.
