Creating Water Filtration Initiative, Thursina IIBS Students Win Gold Medal in GYIIF 2025

The team from Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) succeeded in winning a gold medal in the 2025 Global Youth Invention and Innovation Fair (GYIIF) with an innovation entitled "DRIQS" Drum Water Filtration Clean & Quick using Pressure and Solar Panel for Energy Generation and Vital Equipments with Interactive Melody in Post-disaster.

Consisting of Farik Wirata Vemil, Abyan Motivano Zoenarto, Adhis Alvaro Savaraz Putra Ismawan, Kian Faraz Daniswara, and Raihan Ahmad Pradipta, they created a drum-based water filtration system with solar power that can be used in post-disaster situations. The innovation combines fast water filtration, an electrical energy source from solar panels, and interactive feature in the form of a melody to help psychological recovery of disaster victims.

The team revealed their innovation was based on Indonesia's conditions in the Ring of Fire, which makes it vulnerable to natural disasters. “Clean water is immensely crucial to prevent dehydration and malnutrition in emergency condition. "Furthermore, electricity is the primary need of modern society, while psychological recovery has to be considered in post-disaster," said Farik Wirata, one of the team members.

The research methods used included making a three-part drum from HDPE plastic, installing PVC pipes for pressure, and iron to support the filtration system. They also added a solar panel on the top of the drum as a source of electrical energy and connected it to the battery via a TP 4056 5V system. For interactive features, they integrated an Arduino Uno with a speaker and matrix in a melody box.

The results of the DRIQS innovation have showed extraordinary achievements, with a maximum output voltage reaching 158.8V, fast filtration of 32.7 liters per 5 minutes, and qualified water produced meeting the WHO standard. These advantages were the main factors in gaining gold medal in this prestigious international event.

Thursina IIBS students have once again demonstrated their abilities and innovation on the global stage, advancing Indonesia's name to a higher level in the field of science and technology. (lil)
