Exceeding the Target, Four Thursina IIBS Students Head to Jakarta for KRAN 2024
As many as 18 students of Thursina International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS), from both junior and senior high school levels, took part in Taman Pintar Water Rocket Contest, 2024. Organized by Taman Pintar Yogyakarta in collaboration with Yogyakarta City Culture Service, it aims to introduce aerospace technology to students and public in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Central Java and surrounding areas. The event held on Saturday (21/9/2024) in Embung Giwangan Cultural Park.
The competition had attracted students aged 12 to 18 years old, offering them a chance to implement knowledge as well as compete with other students to develop aerospace technology in Indonesia.
Physics teacher of Thursina IIBS as the supervisor, Ustadz Helmi Pakas, M.Pd. explained that it has provided great advantages in introducing main concepts in physics. "The Water Rocket used applies basic physics concepts such as liquid and gas pressure, Newton's laws of action and reaction, and aerodynamics," said Ustadz Helmi. "Furthermore, it is a simple model, helping to understand the principles of actual rocket construction," he added.
He also conveyed the mechanism of water rockets used by the students in the competition. "We use 1 liter capacity bottle filled with around 450 milliliters of water, applied with pressure of 60 to 80 psi. The rocket can launch reaching 60 meters from the launch point by this method," he said.
The achievements are quite encouraging, by reaching the top 20 nationally. It is outstanding accomplishment following several participations in the championship. "All praise be to Allah, this is highly satisfying result for us. The top 20 national ranking has showed a significant increase from previous years," said Ustadz Helmi.
Surprisingly, a team of four Thursina students, Ilham Wahyu, Rayna Nabila, Abdurrahman Hanif Al-Ghifary, and Azzam Muyassar, received recommendations to represent Yogyakarta and East Java in the National Water Rocket Contest (KRAN) 2024. It will be held at TMII Jakarta by National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
We are grateful for this achievement and will evaluate and train our team to perform more excellently in the next competition. "The event has attracted many other schools to join and encouraged the interest in water rocket technology among students," Ustadz Helmi told.
Thursina team are ready to step on to greater competition level with persistent enthusiasm and thorough preparation to make proud their school and region in this prestigious event. (rnw/lil)
