Framing Education Through Role Model

"We cannot give something we never had". The  saying of the ancient Arabic proverb relating to the word 'give' as the key with education.  What I have observed during almost eight years as a teacher, being the ideal model is the hardest part in the teaching activities. Transfering character would be most effective with good example. Unsuprisingly, many students admire teachers with strong character. This kind of qualities has made the profession becoming one of the careers with high responsibility.

Following teaching activities or after school time, a teacher cannot leave his profession and carry his professional identity wherever he is, both in his residence and community. Thus, the career is not for everyone unless they are determined in it.

Based on Law No. 14 of 2005, concerning Teachers and Lecturers, Article 10 paragraph (1) states teacher competence as referred to Article 8 includes pedagogical, personality, social and professional competence obtained through professional education. Simply put, pedagogical competence is related to student characteristics and learning theories, personality is correlated with the character of a teacher, social capacity is associated with the teacher's communication skills, and professional capability is equivalent to mastery of scientific material & curriculum.

If the teaching profession is analogised to a building, it must be complete with the foundations, walls, roofs, roof tiles and all the furniture. Teachers are role models for students to build their character. Unfortunately, the pandemic occured in the early of May 2020 had hampered the transfer of an excellent model of teachers toward students. Online learning and interaction, however, have more limitation than direct learning.

Nevertheless, several things are able to be exemplified  in the midst of online learning. Firstly,  an example of speaking considerate words. A teacher has to use fine language even when angry. By using courteous and polite language, students will unconsciously imitate this way of speaking.

Secondly, setting a mannerly exemplar. A teacher must set an example of excellent behavior.  When the teacher has some troubles thus postposning the schedule of class, he is required to notice to the class leader with the proper way. It might seem trivial, nonetheless, the act has exemplified to the students informing and confirming each other is crucial and have to get used to it.

Thirdly, an example of regard. Politeness and appreciation show respect for others. The teacher should exemplify during learning activities. For illustration, when a student has tried to paint, howbeit, the result is under the expectation, the teacher should try to appreciate his effort to perform the task. The attitude of mutual respect is necessary to be instantiated to students.

Furthermore, the Role of parents is significant in building the character of children, especially, during the pandemic they spend almost all time at home.  Parents have to set an ideal model for them. For instance, when parents limit their time for playing games, they should not play game either. Advices from parents are able to change child attitudes with the standart thus they are enlightened by their parent's guidance.

Both parents and teachers have to collaborate in their respective responsibility to be role model for children.  We all agree, science is essential, yet, morals are more vital.  As Imam Malik once said, 'learn manners before seeking knowledge'.
